Karma, rebirth and justice

Step 1 of 7

Is karma just?

Karma without a Lord (Jain)

The soul is bound by eight kinds of karma, and bound by them it turns round and round in the circle of births. Karma decides pain and pleasure, the length of life and the family one is born into. No maker governs the world. Each soul reaps only its own deeds, and no one can share them: the karma follows the doer. Right knowledge, faith, conduct and austerities free the soul from misery that has no beginning.

The case for it

The soul is bound by eight kinds of karma, which turn it round in the circle of births. They decide pain and pleasure, the length of life and the family line.

Where it falls short

Grant the eight kinds of karma. Karma that fixes pain, life and family by its own nature is a mechanism. A mechanism is neither just nor unjust, and it shows the soul none of its deeds.
