The Buddha, God and the scriptures
Step 1 of 10
Did the Buddha believe in God?
The Pali texts (Theravada)
The Pali texts do not teach a God who made the world. They show a Brahma who thinks he made other beings and is wrong. They argue that a Lord who made every act would leave no one responsible.
The case for it
Brahma thinks he made other beings. But he is a mistaken being, born into a world that already exists (Digha Nikaya 1).
Where it falls short
Granted. A being who arrives after the world has begun, and who is wrong about who made others, is not a Maker. The Qur'an says its God is not born and that nothing is like Him.
